#244 - John O'Callaghan (The Maine)
When you find out you're wrong about a lot of bands from the mid-00s and probably in a future episode of the Kardashians.
I must have two or three of the same requests from a music publicist, which is normal, to interview some bands related to the Sad Summer Tour. I brushed it aside with the usual anger toward emo as sad and left it unread. I was not interested.
I then remembered seeing The Maine recently open for Fall Out Boy in California. They got a crowd excited and interested in their music, which was quite full by the time they went on. It was something I was not expecting. I can’t tell from an arena if they were fans before, but based on the audience and the shirts being worn, a lot were just as surprised as I was. I was happy to see that reaction from the fan bases but also for something new. Going into this show, I was pretty negative, and it quickly turned after seeing their performance.
As I contemplated the email again, it was obvious I needed to talk to someone in the band and talk to them about their performance, their longevity as a band, and surviving the waves. I incorrectly had assumed the same story of where and when things happened. I felt not that their stories weren’t helped by a large wave of support from the mass media but by the “fall out” from that success over time and how many of the bands from that era continued and were trying to succeed on many levels.
It was really enjoyable talking to John about this era and his thoughts on how things went from their perspective. We also dove into the Sad Summer Festival, which starts in a few days. I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Kardashians Run
I spent Saturday morning in a parking lot outside The Forum in Inglewood, CA. As the planes peeked through the marine layer before the onslaught of heat, about 800+ people showed up to run a 5k with Travis Barker. Later that night across the parking lot at the stadium, Blink-182 would be playing for god knows how many people. It was rad to see people coming out to do their first run ever.
